EU NATO ESDP....

March 2009

Check the two reports agreed by the EU Parliament on accelerating the process of the militarisation of the European Union and making the links between the EU and NATO even stronger. While they are non-binding, they show that majority of the members of the EU Parliament support the militarisation of the EU and stronger EU/NATO links. This is the same Parliament that voted not to respect the decision of the Irish people.

There can be now no doubt whatsoever that the Fianna Fail Party and the rest of the Irish political/media elite intends to use its power and wealth to subvert the Irish Constitution and force the Irish people to vote again on exactly the same Lisbon Treaty/ EU Constitution that was rejected by the Irish, Dutch and French people, this year, possibly as early as April or May and by October at the latest in the context of these resolutions having been passed by the EU Parliament.

While there is a strong case that to do so is illegal and in contravention of Article 6 of the Irish Constitution and while PANA has established a Defend the Constitution Fund to take a legal challenge to the Irish Supreme Court, since it would mean raising EUR 1 million it is very unlikely PANA could do so.

The fact that it would cost such a large amount of money is just another indication as to how the existing power in the state system favours the rich; and there can be no doubt whatsoever that when it comes to large brown envelopes or suitcases stuffed with cash been given to political leaders, the arms dealers have nothing whatsoever to learn from property developers. The reality is that the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty was a major defeat for the neo-liberal militarist elite that have brought Ireland, Europe and the rest of the world to the brink of disaster. Another rejection by the Irish people would be an absolutely massive defeat for them and a great victory for not just the Irish people but all those throughout Europe who believe in a Democratic, demilitarised and socially just Europe. The referendum will be a European battle fought on Irish soil.

It is a battle between an Imperialist Europe and a Democratic Europe. We must win it, not just for Ireland's future, but for the future of all the people's of Europe.
